The maintenance manual calls out to wipe down the struts prior to refueling. The reasoning is to clean the dirt off the chrome so not to cut into the seals. You can purchase some Strutwipes (www.strutwipe.com) and they come with and without a glove. They are in a zip locked foil sealed bag so they can be reused. I get about four flights per wipe.

You’re in luck. Aerospace Coatings International (www.aerocoatings.com) in Oxford, Alabama has an approved process to re-chrome Cherokee and other Piper struts.
I just spoke with Tiffany at customer service there and was told that if the outside diameter of the strut that needs repair is less than two and a half inches the cost is $650; if the measurement is greater than 2.5 inches the cost is $775.
Tiffany said to send the strut to the 370 Knight Dr. address in Oxford. Include all of your contact information (phone, email) and the strut part number.
If the strut can’t be repaired for any reason, there is an $80 fee to cover the inspection phase.
Turn around time was quoted at 14 to 21 days. Every re-chromed strut is sent back with a fresh airworthiness (8130) tag.
I’ve spoken to Chromecraftreman.com and to the askogroup.com in Sacramento and Seattle, respectively and both companies are chroming specialists, but both told me that they would have to have printed data related to the specifications of size, type of chrome and other details.
It looks like Aerospace Coatings is the company best set up to do your struts.
Please let me know how it turns out.

ANOTHER Strut Question. There are some nicks and chips on the lower part (exposed portion:) ) of all three struts. I am considering having all three re-chromed during my next annual. QUESTION; Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get this done OR would like to share if they have had this done?

    Thank you

The strut seal kits are around twenty five dollars and it takes about a quart of 5606 hydraulic fluid per strut. Most shops around here locally (Knoxville) charge around two hours of labor to seal a strut.

I have a left hand main gear strut leaking on my Cherokee 235, does anyone have an estimate for the maintenance man hours and parts cost to repack the main landing gear?
