    Steve
Aircraft Spruce lists the AN5812-12 as a Universal Pitot Tube and Chief Aircraft has this notation:
    —–
    <12V Heated Pitot Tube, TSO
Heated pitot tube under-wing mounting on many aircraft, including Mooney, Beech, Piper, Maule, American Aviation aircraft, Glasair and more. Features a threaded outlet for 1/4" AN tube fittings.
    FAA TSO-C16 and Military Approved
    Electrically heated for anti-icing protection
    Accuracy up to 600 knots
    Temperature range -65°C to +70°C>

I’ve searched for a model applicability chart for the TSO on the Aero Instruments website but find no more information than noted above. The used parts option seems viable but I don’t want to spend money on the part until I’m sure the TSO is applicable to my aircraft. Can you suggest the best way to find the applicability details for the TSO.

I’ll investigate the field approval of the Piper part.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi Brian;
Yeah, I see what you mean.
I did find a bunch of used Aero Instruments heated pitot tubes on a site called picclick.com. Find one that looks good then click on the “see details” tab below. I recommend going for one that’s for sale by a salvage yard.
This might be the easiest way to get to one of these, if you’re OK with using a used one.
Most aircraft salvage yards offer a money back guarantee for a limited time.
You can also try to explore the possibility of installing a used serviceable blade type heated unit and getting a field approval for that change.
I don’t know how amenable the local FAA FSDO is in your area to a proposal like that since this option varies widely from one area to the next.
Let me know what road you chose to follow.
    Thanks
    Steve

I’m investigating installing pitot heat on a 1964 Cherokee 235. (SN28-10045) This vintage of Cherokee predates the “knife blade” pitot-static tube and has static ports in the tail and a small pitot tube on the left wing (Piper part#63907-00). The Piper Heated Pitot Static kit (Piper part# 757-004) is NA by serial number for my aircraft per the catalog. Aero Instruments offers a heated pitot tube with a TSO for Piper (AN5812-12) but it’s quite expensive. So far, the Aero Instruments pitot is the only one I’ve found for certified aircraft. Anyone out there with suggestions on a pitot tube available with a TSO for a Piper Cherokee 235 other than Aero Instruments?
