Thanks Ken, my air leak isnt coming from the closeable fresh air vents vents but from the air grills (should be air flowing out of the cabin) located on the forward facing bulkhead (behind your legs if you were a rear seat passenger) under the bench seat. thanks for the tip though i do have a weeping fresh air vent on the front left too.
Cherokee 140 bench seat vents blowing air in to the cabin

The air outlets have foam gaskets that deteriorate over time. So, even when the valves are fully closed, they still leak a lot of air. On my Warrior, all the air comes from vents on front of the wings. No one sells gaskets for these so you have to purchase some 1/8″ high density foam and do the repair yourself. There are flap valves in each of the air inlets that can be removed with a very small screwdriver. I believe that these are #2 machine screws and I used a jewelers screwdriver to remove. Once removed, you will see that there are two flat pieces of aluminum with the gasket material sandwiched between the two plates. You have to drill out the aluminum rivets, replace the gasket material, and either re-rivet or replace with #4 pan head machine screws, #4 washer, and #4 lock nut. Some owners have posted pictures of the repair that will make it easier to do, but I did not take pictures.
Hi Adam,
I would next check for air leaks through the holes in the fuselage skin at the fuselage-to-wing junction.
The flap control rod (on each side), the aileron cables, the pitot and static tubes and the fuel line from the fuel tanks (on each side) go through these holes. Thanks Phil!
The fresh air vents/shutoff valves are all functional. These are the 2 grills that are on the front face of the bench seat that (should) take air out from the cabin, thru the battery wing box and discharge from the vent hole in the belly, instead it’s back flowing in thru those non-closeable vents.
Further info, today I taped off the leading edge fresh air inlets on the inboard wing (the inlets you mentioned) the backwards airflow is still there, question is, where is it coming from?!
Hi Adam;
Based on what you have written and my reference to the POH, it seems like the “large adjustable outlet” for the fresh air inlet near the rear seats is not shutting completely, or is missing.
Here’s an excerpt from the POH I referred to:
“HEATING AND VENTILATING SYSTEM
Heat for the cabin interior and the defroster system is provided by a heater muff attached to the exhaust system. The amount of heat desired can be regulated with the controls located
on the far right side of the instrument panel.
Fresh air inlets are located in the leading edge of the wing
at the intersection of the tapered and straight sections. A large
adjustable outlet is located on the side of the cabin near the
floor at each seat location. Cabin air is exhausted through an
outlet located below the rear seat.”
I can’t pick out the part number of a “large adjustable outlet” as described in the POH when I check the parts manual.
If the fresh air is too cold, and you don’t have the “outlet” as described, you may want to partially block the air inlet in the leading edge of the wing to cut down on the fresh (cold) air coming into the cabin
Sorry I can’t be of more help on this one.
Pls let me know what you find,
SteveHi all,
I have a 1969 Cherokee 140 (over here in the UK) with an odd problem, the air vents on the front of the bench seat (exhaust vents that removes air thru the battery compartment and out of the belly vent) are allowing air flow in to the cabin. I’ve had a friend lift the bench seat in flight and he’s advised me that there air is coming in from the root wings.
Is there any common problem to look for before i borescope the vent tubes/fly with the ram air inlets on the root wings blanked off to isolate the source.
Thanks in advance!! Adam
