Hi Brandon;
An erratic off/on behavior sure points to a break down or open of a wire in the alternator control circuit.
It could be a loose wire, or a breakdown of the field wire between the regulator and the alternator.
If that wire is old, it isn’t too hard to fabricate a new one and change it. I have heard of a situation where there’s a break in the field wire insulation and under certain vibrations/maneuvers the field wire comes in contact with the shield on the wire, which takes the field control voltage to ground, shutting off the alternator.
A dancing ammeter is usually linked to corrosion in the alternator switch. You check across the alternator switch should detect any voltage drop across the switch.
Let me know if I can help further, and what you find.

Erratic Amps
-
All,
Alternator went offline in flight and popped the field CB. After much troubleshooting found the voltage regulator to be bad and field terminal on the alternator loose. The alternator would kick off at 2200 rpm with the old voltage regulator every time.
Changed out the Voltage regulator, replaced alternator brushes, and I am having erratic amps readings on my MVP50 with all electrical components on or off; have not been able to isolate a system causing the erratic readings. Lights, beacons, radios, etc… Alternator will occasionally kick off in flight then come back on by itself with no breaker popping. I am going to check voltage across the master switch and field CB tomorrow and look for loose wires. Brushes on the alternator are brand new. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I have read every forum I can find and will continue the troubleshooting tomorrow.

Brandon
