AS Paul Harvey used to say….Now for the rest of the story. Or in my case the real story. My A&P did use the guidance you mentioned but was not getting the results he wanted. He called the overhaul facility to see if anyone there had any further insights that might help. They mentioned a list of things that might need to be repaired or overhauled. Instead of going through their list I have decided to have the engine overhauled. The fuel control problem is not the only reason for that decision. Thanks for your response.
Fuel Pump/Control
-
Hi Mark,
I did contact the one phone no I had for Albuquerque but did not get a reply.
I doubt I’m as frustrated as you but it really bothers me when mechanics don’t have the manuals that tell them how to complete their tasks.
In fact, it’s not legal for a mechanic to work on a system unless he/she has the correct manual.
Talking to the overhaul facility about how to set up this pump will not work. There are multiple steps that need to be done in order to set up this fuel system. Without the pictures and text in the M-0 manual, he will never come close to getting it right. Once it’s set up correctly, the system is dependable.
I have a feeling there must be more going on than a bum fuel pump. How long has your airplane been down because of this problem?
Before you snatch the engine off and send it for overhaul, can you tell me what else is causing you to decide on what looks from here to be a pretty drastic, and expensive action toward what may be only an adjustment problem.
Have you contacted any other mechanics on the field, or at any of the other airports in the area to ask them if they know exactly how to set up the Continental fuel injection system on your 1978 PA28R-201T? When you find one that can, get him/her to come over to set up yours.
Please fill me in on what’s going on.
Best,
SteveThanks for the response. My A&P did not use the manual you referenced but did consult the overhaul facility. However, he was unable to set up to fuel control properly. This has pushed me off the fence and I am seeking quotes from engine overhaul shops for a complete overhaul. If you have a favorite overhaul shop I would like to hear from you. Again, thanks for the response.
Hi Mark,
I can try to find a good shop in your neck of the woods but the first question is: Does your mechanic have a copy of Continental Manual M-0, titled “Maintenance Manual, Standard practice for spark ignited engines”?
This manual goes into very detailed instructions on how to set up the fuel delivery system on your engine.
If he does not have it, he will have a hard time setting up the system. The Piper manual has a truncated description on how to set it up.
The M-0 manual is a very comprehensive manual that covers all maintenance tasks for Continental engines.
I believe Continental sells copies that can be delivered digitally for $35.
The reason I wrote that I can try to locate a shop that can do it is simply because it’s difficult to get feedback on shops; and because often the shop supervisors move on or go to a different shop.
It’s too late to day to reach out for some feedback but I can do it first thing tomorrow.
What shop are you using now?
SteveI recently had the altitude compensating fuel pump on my 1978 PA28R-201T overhauled and my A&P is having trouble with the set up. I would like to find a shop that has experience with the set up procedure. Preferably somewhere close to my home base near Albuquerque, NM.
