Dear Mr. Hecht;
Your mechanic is correct. Piper prohibits the use of “patch” repairs on all movable control surfaces. This is written in the “structures” chapter of the service manual.
You can buy a used rudder from an aircraft salvage yard or send your control surface to be reskinned or get it reskinned locally.
One very well known control surface repair facility is Williams Airmotive in Kendallville, Indiana (www.airframecomponents.com). It’s likely that Williams has a rudder in stock.
All the skins are still available if you can get the work done locally. Just make sure the shop you choose if experienced a Piper control surface repairs.
Sorry for the bad news,
Best,
Steve
thanks

I have a PA32 300R- straight tail Lance 1976-Just noticed a 3inchX3inch skin repair on both sides of the trailing edge of the rudder. I cannot find a 337 or logbook entry – it was done before I bought the plane. My mechanic advises that this type of repair is taboo on the control surface and the rudder needs to be re-skinned. Is this correct? If repairs are ok where do I confirm and show to my mechanic. Any help appreciated.
