Another option to the 140 with a 160 hp engine upgrade is a PA 28-180. As the “best pipers for” article points out, these are excellent aircraft and while probably more expensive than a 140 with a 160 hp engine, will have excellent re sale value should you ever decide to upgrade to higher performance.
One way to let the (local) world know you’re looking for an airplane is airport bulletin boards and word of mouth. Often this method is the best way to find a good deal since the seller hasn’t had to pay to advertise his airplane sale.
Other avenues are online sites such as Controller.com, Trade-A-Plane.com, and aerotrader.com.
Finding a good airplane at a price you can afford can take a long time.
The most important step you can take when considering an airplane for purchase is paying for a very thorough pre purchase inspection.
