Attention PA-28 owners. New AD proposed

Attention PA-28 Owners. New NPRM

On the basis of one accident The FAA is proposing to supersede an existing airworthiness directive (AD) that applies to certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA-28-140, PA-28-150, PA-28-160, PA-28-180, PA-28R-180, and PA-28R-200 airplanes. AD 71-21-08, Amendment 39-1312 (36 FR 19572, October 8, 1971) currently requires replacement of the fuel selector valve cover. This proposed AD would add additional airplanes to the AD’s applicability section and changes the compliance time of the required actions.

(See NTSB info here: https://dms.ntsb.gov/aviation/AccidentReports/aj3cypat24ezlrzjjnej5rz51/V09032013120000.pdf )

The cost of compliance is estimated at over $600 per plane.

This begs the question: Does one accident involving a poorly maintained airplane and an inexperienced pilot warrant this action?

Please read the NPRM information and the NTSB report to make your own decision and be sure to comment before the deadline of October 4, 2013.
