Thanks Kent and Steve!
My A&P R&R’d my MAP Gauge “Light Ring” and it works like a champ! It’s Bright on full UP and dims nicely…so I think that was my problem, the individual Light Ring.
They run about $75 apiece and I’ll need 5 more, so we’ll see how it plays out.
Kent thanks for the “Oil Change” Webinar last night!
Bill Ross was great and I learned a lot!
Thank you for making these available to the new owner every month!
I downloaded Bill’s “Engine Management 101” and I’m looking forward to going through it!
Thanks again, Stay Safe!

PA-34 Seneca III SN 34-8133220 Panel Lighting Question
-
Thank you Steve and George.
Thanks Steve!
Yes, I will review your wiring diagram with my A&P!
We are looking at that very “potentiometer” as it’s called in the Piper Parts Catalog.
Attached is a copy of those pages if anyone else has a similar concern!
I’ll let you know!
Thanks again!
George
CLEI got the wiring circuit for the panel lights. There is a transistor in each dimmer; I don’t have the spec for the resistor but if there’s an electronics expert around –may be beyond the typical avionics shop since most don’t do bench work or repairs any more–he/she may be able and willing to replace the transistors, which are probably the problem
If not, I recommend replacing the faulty dimmer with one of the Seaton industries dimmers I mentioned in an earlier post.
Let me know what your find.
SNever a bad question.
Thank You Kent & Steve!
Thanks for the great suggestions!
My IA is still troubleshooting and I’m thinking we’ll just end up changing out the “Panel Lites” potentiometer.
It’s hard to believe a new Seneca III woulda come outa the box in 1981 with Panel Lighting being that dim…that’s what I’m wondering if other guys are seeing the same on their III’s Panel?
Thanks, I’m sure I’ll have more “dumb pilot” questions soon!
George
CLEI am not that familiar with the Seneca III system, but I like the simplicity of your plan to swap the rheostats.
The best replacement instrument lighting control system I’ve found is the MaxDim/MiniDim controllers from Seaton Engineering (https://seatoneng.com/)
I put the Max Dim unit in my airplane; it works great.
Please let me know what you find.
Thanks,
SteveHello All!
Quick question from a New Guy…
I am the Proud Owner of a new-to-me 1981 Seneca III!
She’s beautiful and fun to fly!
One thing I kinda missed on the Prebuy was the proper intensity of the panel lights.
When I, and the IA, looked at them, they seemed to work, but flying the other night, they are very dim, almost unusable at that level of intensity, even when cranked all the way up.
So I’m confused…
My experience on other Piper products, is these panel lights can be so bright that you gotta turn them down at night, but not these.
Is this just a Seneca thing??
My airplane has a integral lighting arrangement but the bottom Fuel Flow Indictor has post lighting.
There are actually 2 knobs controlling the panel lights, one marked “Panel” the other marked “Radio”.
The “Radio” lights are just fine, they go full bright and dim nicely. That rheostat only lights a single OBS Indictor just left of the IAS and the Garmin Audio Selector Panel. All the other Avionics are self lit.
As an A&P I tried doing a little bit of troubleshooting and cleaning the contacts, but it’s beyond my paygrade. My IA is looking into it now, but I was wondering if the group might know something about this particular question.
Along with the integral lighting this Seneca III also has Overhead Lighting on the ceiling that shines down and forward on the panel from 2 ceiling lights and a single light on the left sidewall by the pilots left knee that shines up and forward. Those lights work fine with the Panel Light rheostat. They are to “bathe” the entire panel in indirect lighting, but still there is a lack of intensity from the individual instrument lights themselves.
So, just not sure if this is something I gotta live with for now, or if there is something wrong that we can fix??
Maybe in the individual rheostat potentiometer??
Maybe swap ‘em??
Or is that just the way it is until Mr. Piper fixed it in the IV and V.
Help, Over…. ?
Thanks!
Stay Safe, Fly Fun!
