Hello Bill, I have familiarity with the PiperAire system as I’ve resurrected one for my Piper Archer. In fact, I wrote an article about a/c in the May 2025/Volume 22 Piper Flyer magazine. It’s not a difficult job, but it can be quite expensive, somewhat time consuming and you must be scrupulously clean by flushing every component in the system if you plan to convert your PiperAire to the current R-134A requirements. If you would like more conversation, send me an email at jpaird@icloud.com and we can arrange to chat –maybe even a phone call with your mechanic. Best, JP
Thanks Steve and I hope you had a blast at Oshkosh.
I have already contacted a few east coast service centers. Hopefully I will find an adequate shop.
Bill
Hi Bill,
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to respond. I was at AirVenture for the last 8 days.
I can’t vouch for any other these listings.
Simply because I don’t have enough East Coast experience.
About the best I can do is direct you to the Piper Aircraft Service Center listings.

Hi Jen,
Yes, I did read that earlier this year. Great series of articles.
I am looking for recommendations on shops in the NE (I am at KBVY). The shop that assisted JP is in Michigan.

Hi Bill,
One of our other members wrote about his experience restoring this PiperAire. You can read about it on Page 20 in the May 2025 Piper Flyer magazine. MAY 2025 PIPER FLYER MAGAZINE
Might provide some insight. Where are you based?
Jen
Hi,
I recently purchased a 1986 Dakota. The AC is INOP, but everything is there – compressor, condenser, vents. At some point it was converted to 134a refrigerant.
I am anxious to begin the process of resuscitating the system…with an A&P taking the lead. My A&P has never tackled this before, so I would like to find a shop in the Northeast that has experience with such a project. If you have a shop to recommend that has revived an old Piper-Aire system, please let me know.
Many thanks! Bill
