If you’re using an Avidyne 440 or 540 you’ll be interested in this piece of information. I got a pleasant surprise yesterday that I thought I’d share with you. Back in the days of my Garmin 530, I had to purchase an obstacle database periodically along with the base map and charts. I was poking around the Avidyne website under support and I found an icon entitled “Downloads and Documents”. In this section is all of the current documentation for each piece of avionics that Avidyne makes. This is no surprise but I did download all of the current information on the four Avidyne boxes that I have. What I didn’t expect was to find an icon entitled “Obstacle Data”. Clicking on this icon will get you to a webpage that allows you to download new obstacle data for your IFD-440/540 FMS. And best of all, it’s FREE. Back on my 530 it was a noticeably expensive download. You can download this to your memory stick and it will load into your 540/440 in just a minute or two.
