At home near Charlotte, NC. My last post was about 3 hours ago so about 6:45 local? So I’m guessing the “clock” on the forum is off a bit.

    Kent,

My understanding was that the increased TBO limits were not applied to planes that did not get frequent usage or were used for crop dusting.  I think the frequent usage limits were to deal with potential corrosion with long intervals of sitting and the crop dusting limitation was due to a lot of “yanking and banking”. So those “limits” have been dropped, which I think is pretty significant.

Here is the exact wording from the Lycoming web site:

    CROP DUSTING LIMITATIONS REMOVED
    NO FREQUENT USE REQUIREMENT

So now the 2600 hour TBO will apply to those as well IF that was read correctly.

    Eric

    Hi Eric-

Been at AirVenture for the last twelve days.  What a ton of fun.                                                            Thanks for bringing this up.

Can you bring me up to speed on the FREQUENT USE requirement and the CROP DUSTING limitations?  I’d appreciate that.

I’d like to say …. Frequent Crop Dusting, but that’s too obvious.

    Kent

Lycoming has announced an increased TBO of 2600 hours for factory new or factory rebuilt engines. These are the qualifying engines at this point: O‑320, IO‑320, O‑360, IO‑360, IO‑390, O‑540, and IO‑540 series, Rotorcraft engine also get an increased TBO by an extra 300 hours above the original base TBO although they did not specify what that was. TBO for regular overhauls outside the factory are still at 2200 hrs. This is excellent news for all those Pipers that use Lycomings, and that’s a lot including my own Apache.

Please note the increase is ONLY for FACTORY NEW or REBUILT engines however it certainly won’t hurt the status of the rest of the fleet. Also, Lycoming is removing the FREQUENT USE requirement and the CROP DUSTING limitation.

Overall, I think this is a HUGE improvement for Lycoming Engines. Continental and Rotax, you are next!
