    I am still using Collins VHF-251 and VIR 351 nav and comm in my Comanche. They still work great. I believe it’s because I replace the coax cable and the antennas when I installed then 10 years ago. A radio can be aligned and up to specs power wise but if the parts of the system outside the “box” meaning the coax and antenna are not “airworthy” the performance will be poor.
    You’re on the right track.

    Hi Steve, My pleasure. I was really happy when I saw your name as a technical advisor. You are famous in my world. I took John Frank’s 210 course and still have the manual. I have read many of your articles in the various publications and consider you to be an expert. I’m sure I have met you at Airventure, maybe as recently as the last time John went to KOSH. My Twin Comanche is in good shape right now. I did a four month owner-assisted annual marathon this year, so many items were taken care of. Right now I have my NAV antenna removed to see if that might be the problem as to why my NAV2 signal is poor and the NAV1 signal is degrading. I haven’t taken it to an avionics shop because they are swamped with ADSB installs and will be until at least June from what I hear. I was thinking of posting my findings on Delphi Comanche(where my other projects were posted) and maybe here after I finish the project. I have cleaned the antenna dipoles and replaced the SS hardware. I’m waiting for the RG-58C/A coax and the BNC connectors from Aircraft Spruce (arrive tomorrow) to make the balun, then and run the coax down to the dorsal fin bulkhead and inside where I will make the male and female connections. I’m renting a good pair of BNC crimpers from the local ham radio shop, “Ham-sters” since I only need to make 2 connectors. The balun was corroded as was the connectors, so I’m thinking I am headed in the right direction. I have IA’s and A&P’s on my field who supervise me and sign off.

    Hey Chris, You are right. Let’s see what she looks like and go from there. You might have found a gem! Flying an Aztec will be loads of fun.

    Hi Gomer;
    Thanks for helping out by adding your experience to the give and take on the Piper Flyer forum.
    I hope all is well with your and your Twin Comanche.

    Hey Gomer,

    Just like everything else, a lesson in compromise! I’m looking forward to it….160-165 will be fine for what I want to do. If I need more later, then I’ll look for something which will provide the added need. For now, just need to get the annual done (for my pre-buy) and see how it looks.

    Hi Chris, That’s one of the tradeoffs. You should be able to purchase a nice Atzec for a less money that might require less upkeep.

    Hi Chris, My 24x24x24GPH meant I was getting 180 kts using 24″ MP & 2400 RPM, @ 24GPH fuel burn. My plane had two main tanks and two aux tanks. The main tanks on the C310 are the tip tanks, which were designed to break away in case of a crash. If your mains are close to full, you must burn those tanks first as the return from the IO520’s always goes back to the main tanks. The Bendix RSA fuel injection on my Twin Comanche does not return fuel to any tank, so I don’t need to consider that fact. The mains hold 51 gallons each. There were 20 gallon (each) or 31.5 gal (each) aux tanks available as options, as well as wing locker tanks, so a C310R might have anywhere from 102 gal to 207 gal (203 useable). My C310R didn’t have locker tanks, and I wouldn’t want them, as that locker space is very handy. I kept the engine covers, oil, and such things in those lockers. I’m trying to remember which aux tanks I had. I believe my total fuel capacity was 143 gallons. I last flew it in 1995, so it’s a while back. The most capacity would have been 166 gallons. I remember one time I flew back non-stop from Hattiesburg, MS, by myself to SW MI and had divert to Midway instead because there was ground fog all over Indiana and Michigan. I had a good tailwind. I remember the Chicago center controller asking me if it would make me low on fuel to divert to Midway, and I recall saying, no, I had plenty of fuel. I just looked up in Quicken the fuel bill at Midway for that flight & see I took on about 86 gallons so I think I must have had 143 gallon capacity. I would have had 57 gallons left in my tanks when I landed at KMDW.
    Clear Skies,

    Good morning, Gomer

    I was told 165kts by two of the guys currently flying it, I assumed it was up at 10-12K. I’ll have to ask. What was your fuel burn on the 310 at 180kts? Total fuel onboard?

    Chris
