    I have in the past month experienced more starts where the starter is hesitating/pausing. The A&P said the amp draw is 160 vs 90 which is what Skytec said it should be.

    the battery checks out fine.

    The starter was installed on 2019 and has 707 hours on it.

    Do you have a recommendation on what starter I should get Skytec, B&C, Prestolite ?for my 1981 Piper Dakota 0540J3A4D

    Thank you-

    Steve-

    Thank you for weighing in here. I wound up replacing the starter and after going back and forth BNC vs Skytec I decided to stay with the Skytec as it lasted 6 years and over 700 hours. The experience has caused me to research how to get the most out of your starter. Only cranking for so long and waiting to engage the starter after a first or second attempt to allow it to cool down. Thank you for always responding so quickly with helpful advice.

    Hi Charlie,
    What action did you take?

    Change the starter?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Charlie;
    Do you know if the starter contactor has been changed? There can be a lot of electrical resistance in a contactor.

    Measure the voltage at the in side; compare it to voltage at the out side with the starter engaged.

    If you decide to swap out the contactor, LAMAR makes a lot of contactors. You’re looking for an intermittant duty contactor rated for your airframe voltage.

    Aircraft Spruce has them for around $120

    Research shows that the B & C starter is a good starter with a good reputation.
