Hi;
There are products on the market that will “sand” away a thin outer layer of a windshield. These kits consist of foam cushions that mount on a drill motor or rotary sander. The outer layer of material is removed with a coarse grit (relative to the other grits in the kit) of sand paper.
From what I understand as the window is sanded water is sprayed onto the surface to wash away the material that is being removed. Then a smoother grit paper is attached and the surface it “sanded” again.
This is a job that requires some discipline and technique since leaving the sanding on one area too long will create a distortion in the window due to too much material removed in one area.
The most well know kit is made by Micro Mesh and is available from all aircraft supply houses.
If your windshield has deep crazing such as sometimes occurs above a defroster vent or at the edges of older windshields no amount of “sanding” will fix these.
I urge you to consider replacing your windshield–there’s nothing in the airplane world that will improve the visual part of flying as much as a new windshield.
Best,
Stevepa-34 need to sand windscreen can hardly see from the crazing – any one ever do this
