There may not be any skits broadcasting live from New York, but this July 21 event will keep your attention focused on the stage for another episode of this always-interesting, always-packed #Oshbash event.
June 2015-
Contributing editor for Piper Flyer, Airplanista blogger and private pilot Dan Pimentel hosts a social event every year at Oshkosh called #Oshbash.
“#Oshbash,” said Pimentel, “began simply as a meetup of several people I knew from the #avgeek community on Twitter.” An #avgeek according to Pimentel is “someone that is as passionate about technology and social media as they are about aviation.”
Pimentel’s simple idea—to get everyone who is already connected by a certain social media hashtag to physically show up to one room during Oshkosh—has really taken hold. This year, Piper Flyer is in on the fun as an event sponsor.
But Pimentel is quick to defer attention away from himself. “These #Oshbash events… really about the people who show up,” he explained.
No matter what format the event takes—and every year has been different—it is always a “celebration of the #avgeek, podcaster, blogger and aviation social media communities,” said Pimentel.
The event, typically scheduled for Tuesday night during the week of EAA AirVenture and held at the EAA Press HQ, attracts a dedicated group of #avgeeks, but heartily welcomes newcomers.
There’s no need to stash your PED, either. Tweeting, blogging and other forms of electronic dissemination are welcome before, during and after the event.
On Tuesday, July 21, with support from PFA, #Oshbash is presenting “Affirmative Attitude Live!”—a “live” version of Pimentel’s monthly column by the same name, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Press HQ just north of the control tower on the AirVenture grounds.
On stage that evening will be many of the GA advocates and volunteers that Pimentel has written about, and attendees can expect to hear from each of the invited guests about the work they do, what’s inspired them to take action, and much more. (See the lineup on the right. —Ed.) If time allows, Pimentel will also take questions from the audience.
“My Affirmative Attitude column honors the extraordinary people in the aviation family that are making a difference in our GA world. These are regular people pushing their personal envelope to reach higher and accomplish more,” said Pimentel.
“I invite you to come to #Oshbash and meet these movers and shakers. See what motivates them, and learn ways you can channel your passion for aviation into giving back to our flying community.”
“As with the past three #Oshbash events, I expect a standing-room-only crowd,” Pimentel said. The 80 or so seats are expected to fill by 5:15 p.m.
Latecomers are welcome, as there is additional room in the breezeway and outside between the HQ building and the Media Reception area, with audio broadcast over the Press HQ’s PA system.
For those who are unable to attend in person on July 21, 2015, Pimentel expects live streaming of the event by David Allen via OtherPeoplesAirplanes.com.
“I will be encouraging people to use Periscope or Meerkat to do live broadcasts, too,” he explained. “And, of course, anyone is welcome to Live Blog it or tweet during the event.”
Pimentel makes no guarantees about any #Oshbash, except this: “it will be two fun hours spent with like-minded aviators, at the very epicenter of the aviation universe.” (However, PFA can guarantee there will be some surprises!)
For PFA members who will be at Oshkosh, we’d like to extend to you a special invitation to this year’s #Oshbash. But get to the Press HQ early; that’s my recommendation.
