We’ve got an expanded article on this topic coming out in the September 2025 issue of Piper Flyer.

I’ve done my best to provide a table (both here and in the article) that’s backed up by data from various AFMs and POHs, but it’s still important to confirm the Vs1 speed in FAA-approved documentation for a particular serial number aircraft before operating it as a Sport Pilot.

The document was published in the Federal Register today. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/07/24/2025-13972/modernization-of-special-airworthiness-certification

Yeah, that 5-5 figure seems to be the anomaly. When I look at it, I also see 59.X kcas.

There aren’t any substantial differences between the various years of Archer IIs that I’m aware of thst would have changed the stall speeds. Same TCDS section, same mtow, same wing, etc.
That makes sense, thanks, Scott. I just have that one graph in Fig 5-5 for my MY1980 that shows it a bit over 59 KCAS, guess I will have to see how it gets interpreted, as it’s the only PA-28-181 data point that shows it over 59.
Just tell them they didn’t squint hard enough to see it correctly!
Performance-wise, your Bearhawk absolutely will qualify. The only thing that I could see pushing it out of the classification envelope is the number of seats. Must be <= 4.
I should OK then as my Bearhawk is the original 4 place. It only has a small bench seat in back anyway and is easily removeable so it can be made into a nice side-by-side 2 place very quickly. So it looks like that would be an option if needed.
