    Hi Joe,

that’s great to hear, I’m happy for you.

Many moons ago I was hangared at Timmerman where Pete/Skycomm was for many decades and he did a lot of work for me. After a while he followed the money from Timmerman to Waukesha and has done well. I’m glad he was able to solve your problem(s).

    Best,
    Scott

Sorry, been away a while. My squeal is TOTALLY fixed now. It continued on throughout my above attempts to have it taken care of. I knew what I had to do, but tried to look for an easier fix.

I was up in the U.P. of MI & called Skycom at the Waukesha WI airport, a Garmin Avionics shop. On the way back home I flew in(with the hand held), got a ride & left my plane there. Pete was great, he 1st took some pictures behind the panel. I could tell the diagnosis as he shook his head a few times.

There was old wire behind the panel, including telephone & household wire, 40 years worth. They basically had to start over. There was an issue with the mount from the original poor installation.

The SL-30 was completely remounted & rewired, including a new part from Garmin as a connection pin was broken. I also got an external antenna connection for my handheld. While there he also fixed an intermittent problem with my transponder. A few other things were taken care of too.

Since then the radio is crisp & clear. Yes it cost a bit, but I couldn’t goo n like I had been.

    Hi Joe,

So what’s the latest with the squeal? Did it finally go away? Fill us in when you have a moment.

    Stay warm,

Yes, for now it is working just great. I went down & they put it back in, freshly returned from Garmin. That squeal it had on/off for the last few months was totally annoying.

That Yaesu handheld(FTA-230) worked just fine, but I’d rather use the SL-30. I did fly in & out of Airventure with the handheld.

I had a new Garmin SL-30 Nav/Com installed about 14 months ago, new CDI too. All was well until 4-5 months ago. It developed an annoying, intermittent, squeal during transmit. It was very random, up to 50% or more of the time. The radio was usable, but generated complaints from most facilities, I could hear it too.

I’ve been living with it & doing trouble-shooting off & on for months. I initially looked at the ignition, charging system, wires & all the headsets & intercom. I didn’t suspect the radio early on, after all it was new. It seemed to be fine with the engine off, at 1st. Then the other week it was doing it with just the radio on, engine off.

I flew down to J.A. Air Center at the Aurora, IL airport & let them do their stuff. I gave a detailed description. I was still enjoying their wonderful FBO facilities when he came back 90 min later & said it was an internal radio problem. I think he may of called it a ‘modulation issue’. The good part it’s still under warranty, on the way back to Garmin.

I was able to limp home with my handheld plugged into my headset. It may be back in time for Airventure, if not I’ll improvise. Since I only have the one main radio, I’ll be very happy to have it working 100% of the time again. I’m leaning towards a new antenna when the radio is ready to go back in.
