An update to my RANGR 978XVR installation. Initially I was experiencing a lot of irritations with my system. Eventually, I changed my Android device from a cell phone to a NEXUS 7. That made a world of difference. The limited memory and processor speed seemed to be the source of my problems. I’m using the 32GB / 2nd Gen version and it’s been perfect since. The only squawk remaining is that occasionally ATC will complain that I’m showing on their radar as two targets, separated by a small distance. On occasion, they will ask me to suppress my ADS-B Out. This problem seems to be an FAA problem in the handling/resolution of the two signals they’re feeding into the ground stations. I suspect this problem will be resolved, eventually. I also get a “ghost” image of my own ADS-B OUT transmission in various areas of the country.
It is amazing how much more traffic is out there, that I never saw or knew was there before. The weather is extremely accurate and helpful. Especially for this VFR-only guy.
I’m running the FF ADS-B with Wi-Fi to AVARE on my NEXUS 7.
On two target display, you may want to get the avionics shop to check the configuration. On my KT-74 you had to supply some parameters to show the offset of the antenna from the nose of the plane in meters. If your installation required the same and that number was wrong, I could see where there could be some duplicate targets.

Installed the RANGR XVR a couple months ago. Been using ForeFlight with Stratus for displaying traffic and it works great. Seeing all kinds of traffic with the FreeFlight providing the out info. Tried the FreeFlight ADSB app, but it gives me a position error message. However heard that FreeFlight and ForeFlightare are collaborating. Hopefully, that will fix the wifi position error and allow me to keep the Stratus in the flight bag.
Hi and good luck with the Rangr system. We’re all interested in your progress and wishing you good luck in the resolving the outstanding issue. As for VFR flying with ADS – B In, there’s no question in my mind. Any time I can get the weather while I’m flying, IFR/VFR local/long distance, I still feel better knowing what the weather is. Regarding spelling and emoticons, try (FIS – B ). Let’s see how this works!

Looks like I’m the only one with the RANGR 978XVR installed. It was installed in December, but I’m still working out the bugs. When it’s working, it’s quite nice. But I’m having some kind of problems getting the IN data to my Android device. FreeFlight has been working with me continously to resolve the problems, but so far it’s sporadic at best.
One might wonder why I bothered having the system installed. I’m a VFR-only guy, but since I fly a lot at night I really wanted good weather “FIS-B” information.
I’d like to hear from anyone else that has the RANGR system and is using the WiFi to their iPad or Android.
VFRs,
Dennis
I just noticed that on this site you can’t put FIS-B in parenthesis without getting an unwanted emoticon, as in (FIS-B).
Your installation is awesome! How about sending a picture or two for the forums? Personally, I’d love to see the 750 with traffic on it.
Congrats!

I upgraded a year ago since I also did not have WAAS in my Garmin 530. So I upgraded (traded-in) the non-WAAS 530 for a Garmin GTN 750, GDL-88, and the GTX327 transponder. In addition, I wanted to upgrade my Garmin portable 496, so I also traded it it for the Garmin portable 796 (with a different vendor). I have ADS-B in / out, TIS-B traffic, and FIS-B weather (on the GTN 750). I decided to temporarily keep the Nexrad weather on the 796 portable to compare the subscription weather product with the free ADS-B / FIS-B weather. Also, the GTN750 cross feeds the flight plan information into the 796 portable and shows the flight path just like the GTN750. I decided to go with the 796 for the backup capabilities in case I should lose the GTN750 (instead of an ipad / Stratus, etc.). Everything works great and I am very happy with the ADS-B traffic and weather on the GTN750. I wonder how I got by without traffic until now!!
Hi Bob,
You’ve done an amazing and thorough job of needs analysis and it looks like you’ve got the best solution at the best price for ADS-B In. In my case I have an equally convoluted sitation. My new Avidyne Transponder doesn’t have TIS as your Garmin transponder does. I’m not too concerned about that because, as you said in your forum post, you can only use one source of traffic. In my case, I’ve got a new Avidyne IFD-540 and my older Garmin GMX-200 MFD and GDL-69 datalink weather receiver. If I purchase the Avidyne MLB-100 for ADS-B In it won’t play on the Garmin GMX-200 MFD. My Garmin GDL-69 datalink weather receiver plays fine on both the Avidyne and Garmin, which is outstanding and one of the big reasons I chose the Avidyne 540. So what to do about ADS-B in Traffic? The Garmin GDL-88 ADS-B In receiver won’t play on the Garmin 200 MFD or the Avidyne 540. According to an email that I got from Garmin, later this year the GDL-88 will be given updated software to function in GDL-90 (obsolete ADS-B In receiver from Garmin) so that the GMX200 MFD can display it. The Avidyne 540 still won’t work. So my solution is to install the MLB100 with the IFD540 GPS just for traffic and continue to use the GDL-69 for weather on both displays; the IFD-540 and the GMX-200 MFD. We’ll see how that works…
Good luck to you and keep us posted on the results of your decision. Pictures are always appreciated!

My Turbo Arrow is now in the shop for it’s ADS-B installation. I have a non WASS Garmin 530/430 and Garmin 330 transponder. I’m upgrading both Garmin radios to WASS and the extended squitter for the transponder. That will give me ADS-B out. I’ve thought a lot about ADS-B in. I flew all over the world for 30 years for the Air Force using radar for weather avoidance and a C-310 for 15 years with radar. The same problem kept happening: I would see weather on the radar and turn to avoid to only find later that worse weather was ahead due to limited range of the radar. The same problem exists if you put weather through the Garmin 503/430 because the unit has a 200 mile range. I want to see weather for the entire route of flight to the destination. So I choose to use Foreflight and the Stratus II. Also the Garmin 530/430 can only receive one traffic input so if ADS-B traffic is displayed I loose the capability to see TIS-B traffic since the transponder has Mode S. So I’ll have unlimited range for weather and ADS-B traffic on the iPad and TIS-B traffic on the Garmin 530. I think this is the best solution, for me anyway with the equipment I have. Another problem is the iPad only has a 3 hour or so battery life and the Stratus II is a little longer. So I’m also installing a True Blue TA 102 dual USB port. That supplies enough amps to actually charge both the iPad and Stratus II. I use a Ram mount on the pilot’s yoke for the iPad. The USB port will be in the lower left corner of the instrument panel so I won’t have wires all over the cockpit.
