    Hi David,

Still learning the Aspen Pro 1000 but it is nice to have the traffic with the GDL 88 displaying it on 430W. Of course, not everyone shows up and probably never will so unless we are solid IFR, we still need to be looking out the windows. Weather is pretty good also. I have experience with the datalink weather, it is nice but the IFR weather I fly the Lance in, this weather is adequate.

    Hi David,

I should have a pic of the new panel in a week or so, the transponder isn’t in yet. I’ll get one posted soon.

    Thanks for asking,

I would be interested in hearing from PFA members regards this topic. I have the Aspen 1000 Pro and MFD, Garmin 530W, and King transponder (not sure, but think it is a KT79). What additional requirements are there?
Scott, how about a pic of the ‘new panel’?

    Hi Keith,
You’re the first to grace the PFA website with a GDL-88. I here it’s outstanding. Perhaps you can tell about the ADS-B In experience. Do you pick it up on the ground? If not, what altitude does it start to work? Do you like the weather? Does is compare to datalink/satelite weather? And traffic; is it usable? Anything would be of interest.

    Happy New Year,

I recently upgraded my 77 Lance with an Aspen Pro-1000, Garmin 340 audio panel, 327 transponder, and a GDL-88. I already had a Garmin 430W so now I have ADS-B in and out with weather. It was painless except for the cost.

    Hi bob,
Several years ago I converted my GNS-530 to a GNS-530W. As I recall I sent the 530 to Garmin while I had my radio guy replace my antenna and cable. When it all came back a few weeks later the difference was astounding. Not only was WAAS there but the unit changed from updating once per second to five times per second. While I’m thinking about it, don’t forget to update your subscription with Jeppessen. Your old GNS subscription(s) won’t work with the WAAS unit(s). I suspect that while you’re waiting on the WAAS upgrade, your radio guy will not only update the antenna/coax cable but also run two RS232 data wires from your 530W/430W to the upgraded (ES model) transponder. What ES, or extended squitter does is allow your transponder to transmit a short burst of data from your GPS back on the secondary radar return. Included in the short burst is your lan/long, and speed along with your mode C altitude and squawk code. When the upgrade is done, don’t forget to test your ADS-B out datalink with the FAA. If you check earlier in these posts you’ll find instructions on how to do that from another PFA member.

My transponder upgrade for ADS-B out comes in March. We’ll share experiences then!

I’m having ADS-B out installed in my Turbo Arrow during the end of January. It involves upgrading my Garmin 530/430 to WAAS and adding the extended squitter (whatever that is) to my Garmin 330 transponder.

To receive feedback on the performance of your ADS-B out setup, you just send an email message to : ‘9-AWA-AFS-300-ADSB-AvionicsCheck@faa.gov’ after your first flight with ADS-B out. You only need to include tail number. transponder make and model, and make and model of GPS unit used as a source to the transponder. Feedback is almost immediate. There is no requirement for you to request the test.
