Hey Eric,

Can you forward a part number to me. I’ll do a global search.

Thanks.

Ahhh… Ashby was so close! It looks like they only fit Apaches 1956 and later. But a great start! Thanks for the pointer! I will check with DiamondAire.

Hi Eric,
Glad you’re still getting ready.
I installed a Dennis Ashby glareshield in my Comanche. His company is now named http://www.aircraftglareshield.com.
These products are now sold through Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. (www.aircraftspruce.com)
They are semi flexible fiberglass. I had to do a small amount of trimming to perfect the fit.
Can be bought with lighting, or without.
You could call Diamondaire in Montana to see if it has a good used one.

The “saga” continues…. Ha! you know it’s bad when it has become a saga! I hope to get my medical back in JAN or FEB of 21 so it is time to get the Apache going. We have done a number of fixes including replacing the right mixture cable, replacing one exhaust manifold on right engine, rebuild entire door locking mechanism and replace rudder pedal boots. Of course a number of smaller things such as add a strap to hold baggage door open, etc.

Still to go is install the overhauled heater.

Now I need to find a glareshield for the top of the instument panel. Anyone know a good place to locate a used glareshield for a 1955 Apache?

Exhaust has been repaired. We used Acorn Welding and everything looks good so far. At this point we are just finishing the door repairs and once it is re-mounted we are ready to fly again! I sent off the Manifold Pressure gauge and got it calibrated and cleaned.
I’m just waiting to hear from the FAA to get my special issuance for my diabetes. I’m told to expect late September at the earliest. So maybe October? At any rate the plane will be ready before me!

Hi Eric, Thanks for the update. I have found that repair stations can basically manufacture a complete exhaust with just one flange or part, as can other assemblies. Let me know how Acorn does with your exhausts. I have thought of using them or Aerospace Welding Minneapolis.
I also hope your medical is reinstated soon!

A quick update on 89P. We found some real problems with the exhaust on the right engine as we were ready to “button it up”. At first we hoped we could do a simple repair as we had a salvage exhaust that was in relatively better shape. However that didn’t work out. So at this point we have ordered a “repaired” exhaust from Acorn Welding. Since they advertise in Piper Flyer I thought I’d give them a shot. They had very competitive prices and will supply us with an exhaust replacement that will be new except for the actual flanges. I will let everyone know how that goes but I enjoyed talking with them on the phone.

Eliu (my mechanic buddy) is getting the final work done on the new door locking mechanism. We bought some upgraded parts from Diamond Aire. This should be a very nice improvement.

Finally, I also have sent off my manifold pressure gauge for overhaul. The needles have an almost 1″ split at static pressure. I talked the gauge manufacturer and they recommended I use Aero-Mach Labs in Witchita, KS. Aero-Mach was able to overhaul for less than a third of the cost of the manufacturer rebuild. Works for me!

Now, I just have to get 89P back in the air… oh, and get my medical back. Hopefully I will have that all important piece of paper in the next month or so.

My mechanic can tell you way more than I can. I do know we pulled off every panel we could on the right side of the plane!
In reality it went fairly smoothly except for one area where the cables were held by a clamp and we couldn’t pull it through. We ended up getting to the clamp from the underside (I think through the nose gear well) and once the cable was through we re-attached the clamp. I can ask him exactly what he did. I was there but not really sure what he did!
