Thanks Steve. Yes the clamps are the new style that have more surface area to mate to the magneto. We made sure of that the first time (when there was no gasket at all!). Still waiting on prop to be returned so he can finish up the annual and I can go fly and check out the gasket that has been replaced for the second time…..keeping fingers crossed that oil doesn’t leak again.
Oil leak from magneto
-
I want your A & P to check to make sure that the hold down clamps are the correct ones. There are about three different types and the correct ones must be used or the clamp down pressure won’t be correct.
It’s a heavy magneto but when using the correct clamps and the correct torque there shouldn’t be any leakage.
Let me know what you find.
SteveMy “new to me” 1988 Saratoga had an oil leak from where the mag attaches to the engine accessory housing. My A&P found that there was no gasket between the housing and mag so he put one on and it stopped the leak…..for about 3 months. It is now leaking again (although not as bad). He removed the mag once again and inspected it. Said it was not crushed, scored, or crimped and that he torqued the nuts to spec. The gasket is really thin but he stated this is the correct gasket per part number from lycoming….anyone else have this problem? By the way, I have the D3000 single housing mag and know about the history. Thanks for any help or thoughts.
