    Hi Mark;
When trying to help owners determine the extent to metal in a filter; the main question is: please remove the prop governor and tell me if there’s any metal in that screen gasket.
When there is, it’s a strong sign that something important broke.
Sorry to hear about this failure.

When you have time, and the failure mode has been discovered and you have made a decision about the next step, please let me know what failed.

    Best,
    Steve

Steve, thanx so much for your information. I emailed Continental around noon eastern time last Friday . Derek responded around 5:00. I was dumbfounded. He reported that the alloy steel chip is from the crankshaft. I suppose that we are looking at an overhaul. The prop governor is not faulty but contained metal flakes/chips that interfered with valve function and resulted in the overspeeding.

    Hi Mark,
I have attached a guideline from one of the most well known oil sample analysis labs showing where various metal originate.

I’m interested in what Continental told you.

    I have two contacts:
    a) Product support and customer service; Derek Springer DSpringer@continental.aero; –888 826-5465  800326-0089  CMTTechnical@continental.aero and CMCustomersvc@continental.aero

    b) Tim Owen Product Support Eng towen@continental.aero  251 436-8128  I believe Tim is their magneto expert but he may be able to steer you in the right direction

Please get back to me with the information Continental provides.

    Good luck,
    S

    Yes, I agree.
What I need is a specific point of contact within TCM. I anticipate a runaround since I am not a mechanic and have never contacted them before. My own mechanic hasn’t engaged in this yet. I hope to jumpstart things.

I don’t know anyone else other than TCM that could answer your questions.

Recent oil filter analysis finds metal chips on the filter leaves. I need to learn how to get into TCM support with the chip identification to hopefully learn their source and implications for moving forward.
    TCM TSIO-360 FB
TCM cylinders with about 300 hours
Lower end has almost 1700 hours; likely looking at overhaul.
AvLab filter analysis of chips: Alloy steel AMS-6414/6415  and aluminum AMS-4280.
My mechanic hasn’t yet moved on this. I’m wondering if I can get the information from TCM but I expect that it will be difficult to get to the person who I need. Any suggestions appreciated!
