Thanks Steve, I went ahead and bought tickets. My dad has a milestone birthday coming up, and my brother and I are going to surprise him with this trip to Airventure. We went back in 2022 and had a good time, but the driving and parking was a drag, at least it was for me. I suppose for those guys it was probably pretty sweet as I dropped them off at the gate before fighting my way back out to the general parking lot and then hoofing it the 14 miles back to the gate. This option will definitely be a lot more relaxing – for me! We’ve got an AirB&B booked less than a mile away from the resort, so planning to drive over in the morning to get on the bus.
Maybe my PA-12 project will even be done by then! Not that I’d be flying it over, but at least being able to bring along some pics of the finished product would be cool.
See you all there!

Hi Steve!
Thanks again for jumping in with info. I’m not sure what’s happening with my replies, but the first attempt seems to disappear, so I apologize for leaving you hanging. I did speak with Mr. Sullivan and wow, what a wealth of knowledge! After talking it over with the shop that’ll be doing the majority of the work on my plane, I went ahead and bought the 2 STC’s from Ron. Since the last post, I’ve decided to add flaps on this project as well. I was originally thinking that this was just going to be a quick re-cover and paint job, but we have quickly gotten into deep water on it.I’ve lied awake many nights contemplating how far to go with this, and I keep arriving at the same conclusion. I’ll be 50 years old this year, and while I am in good health, I have no idea how long that will last. I could put the project off with plans to tackle it in 5-10 years, then end up dying, or developing something that would prevent me from keeping a medical. Also, I’m lucky to still have my father (who got me interested in anviation) around and still flying airplanes at nearly 80, and that can’t last forever. I’d love for him to see this get finished and be able to fly in it with me. My intention is for this to be my “forever” airplane to pass down to kids or grandkids when I can’t fly it anymore. The Good Lord has blessed me greatly, and I’m thankful to be able to do this.
Thanks again for the info, it was a tremendous help.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I replied to your message yesterday, but it looks like something went wrong as it isn’t showing up here now. Good info on the Stitts varnish. She shop doing the work is a Poly Fiber shop, so He might even have some of that on hand. I’ll check with him this week. I’ll check out the tough vinyl too, that sounds like it might be a good option for what I’m doing.TX to Alaska definitely qualifies as an epic flight in my book! I’d love to do something like that some day. The previous owner of my plane did a lot of cool things and went to a lot of cool places in it, and I am hoping that I can do some too. It has a few good mods done already, PA-18 gear and tail feathers, Cleveland brakes, VG’s, 82″ McCauley prop, and an O-320. Along with fabric and paint on this project, it’ll be getting all new lights, 24-gallon Dakota Cub tanks with wig root gauges, skylight, and Steve’s brake cylinders to replace the constantly-leaking Scott cylinders. Flaps would be great, but I just can’t justify the cost. I’m pretty comfortable with slipping, and don’t foresee attempting any landings on 200′ sand bars in my future. Hopefully this old girl will be back in the air by fall!
Thanks again for the info!
Erik
